Lee Livingstone, the 2020 recipient of the Byron Society PhD Bursary will give a talk on the Impact of women’s writing on Lord Byron.[/ezcol_2third_end]
This talk will explore Lord Byron’s interest in women’s writing and the impact several of these women writers had over his career. Attention will be given to three literary figures in particular, whose writings and opinions Byron held in very high regard. Firstly, a literary predecessor, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, whose Turkish Embassy Letters (1763) Byron read multiple times and which almost certainly inspired in part his own ‘Turkish Tales’. Secondly, attention will be given to the French writer and intellectual, Madame de Staël, whose relation to Byron moved from rival to friend and literary mentor. The third and last subject, Mary Shelley, shows another entirely different relationship, with Shelley’s prominence still only rising with the success of Frankenstein (1819) as Byron entered the last years of his own.
